Abbey Church of Saint-Savin
Saint-Savin is one of the most beautiful villages in the valley with its square and small arcades, but also and above all its abbey church steeped in history. Highlights of the abbey church include the current high altar (sarcophagus of Saint Savin, founder of the abbey), distinctive tympanum, Romanesque holy water fonts, 14th-century crucifix, 15th-century paintings on wood depicting the life of Saint Savin, and one of the oldest organs in France (1557). The chapter house (12th century) is a museum of sacred art containing rare pieces. Children will love looking for the holy water font and the door of the Cagots, the valley’s ‘outcasts’ at the time.
